Classy and crazy can live on the same street, right? Think about your own neighborhood. There’s you, and then there’s that guy who rollerblades every summer evening, singing Christmas carols at the top of his lungs. And it’s fine! He’s happy! And, he has a beautiful voice.
And so it’s the same for houses. Especially truly old houses, well kept, perfect proportions, no need to be huge or ostentatious. Some stop you in your tracks, and you breathe “Oh, my. Look at that. I love that house.”
(And then your husband says, “What about our house? I thought you loved our house.”)
This one is so classy I wonder if it may be new and built to look historic; if you know, let me know! And you’ve got to love the matching Fiat!
Here at Triple B we’re not only about showing you where to get your perfect R and R far from the madding crowd (some people think it’s “maddening” crowd, and yes, that applies too! Pardon us, Thomas Hardy….) We’re also just a tiny bit obsessed with bungalows, even if we’re not using that term in the strict, architecturally correct, way.
The word “bungalow” just conjures up a dreamy vision where you can imagine yourself writing that best-seller as you sit by the window at your antique desk, occasionally looking out at the sea, your bare feet resting on cool hardwood floors that someone else swept clean of beach sand…
This cabin overlooks the intracoastal, see more historic beach “bungalows” on Florida’s Space Coast, here
This cottage, in Summer Haven, reminds us of childhood beach rentals, screen doors slamming as we raced to the beach
This colorful cottage lives in Dunedin
Cottage Rose in Indialantic, our favorite beachside consignment shop used to reside in this cool cottage. Their new address is close by: 400 N. Miramar Ave.
The Ryckman House in Melbourne Beach, read more about it here
I won’t call this next one “crazy,” but certainly intriguing!
The Billy Wallace House overlooks the intracoastal
The house is so adorable, and not crazy, but the creative yard decor just might be, in a makes-me-smile kind of way
And here is their mailbox; see more funky Florida mailboxes, here
And I am going to call this next one “crazy,” only because it is a half block to the beach and it looks abandoned! I just don’t get it. You know how I am about Mysteriously Unimproved Waterfront Property (read about that here, and here.) This one is close enough to the ocean to make me so damned curious.
I just want so scoop it up in my arms and carry it home and coax it back to health, just like those sad old dogs at the shelter that people post on the internet, that make me cry. (Someday, when the Three Ring Circus that is our pet menagerie – Gizmo the Corgi, Illy the Squirrel (who is no longer with us, read more about him here) Puppet the All-Barking Rescue Chihuahua Mix – leave us, I’m planning on adopting a senior dog! Don’t try to talk me out of it.)
If anyone knows the story of this house, located in Melbourne Beach, please comment below or send me an email at beachesbarsandbungalows@gmail.com.
Hopefully our photos of classy, and sometimes a little crazy, historic beach bungalows take you to that kind of place, where the workaday world doesn’t exist. Maybe you too can breathe “Oh. I love that house,” or perhaps you might just imagine yourself whizzing by on your rollerblades, the sun beating on your helmet, and you belting out “I’m dreaming… of a white Christmas….”
If we’ve featured your house, we would love to hear from you! We would be grateful to know the story; when it was built, by whom, and anything else you’d like to share with us.
