Yes, it was chilly Christmas eve morning in Cocoa Beach. Our friends up North scoff at us but guys, it was in the upper 50s at sunrise! Our first year at this event where our cute outfits were covered up by jackets!
The frigid temps didn’t keep the crowds away though, and it was reported that over 600 surfing santas were riding the waves. Our party of 5 got separated more than once trying to make our way through the throng on land, and though we are all adults it still felt like when we were kids and our mom’s tight handhold got snatched away for a moment – pretty much pure panic. We quickly located everyone but note to self: have a designated meeting point next time. Also, carrying a mimosa around helps dampen said panic.
But other than that everyone is happy at Surfing Santas. The ocean is dotted with so many surfers in varied costumes, and as in years past the crowd is even more colorful than the surfers. The jackets and fur coats kept the bare skin quotient down a bit – here are a few cuties from years past showing off some tan skin:
Surfing Santas raised over $40,000 this year for Grind for Life, a non-profit that provides financial assistance to cancer patients traveling long distances for treatment, and the Florida Surf Museum. Started by a guy and his wife and kids almost a decade ago, this event has gone from just the Trosset family to over 10,000 participants!
The gamut ran from fur coats to bare behinds this year. Way fewer bare behinds than the last few years. And may I say this? Though the trend has been around for awhile now, I still don’t quite get it. Cheeky is cute, but thong bathing suits? Doesn’t it basically say “LOOK AT MY BUTT.” And I know I need to just stop here because my next sentence was going to talk about how some butts should stay under cover. But I won’t.
Here are the highlights of Surfing Santas 2018:
If you don’t want me to take your pic, don’t dress up!
The REAL Santa was here! Chilling before jumping onto his sleigh and getting on with his main job
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!
