Surfing Santas in Cocoa Beach, Florida – Where the Crowd Might be More Colorful Than Santa Himself!

Last Updated on December 25, 2018 by Marybeth

Yes, Surfing Santas is about Santa on a surfboard. Every year here in Florida Santa gets a quick set in Christmas Eve morning before jetting off to deliver presents all over the world. And while these Santas are fun to watch, and most don some kind of festive nod to the season, it’s the crowd who keeps the cameras snapping.

For eight years now, growing from a family group to nearly 650 surfers and what seemed like 8,000 spectators this year, Surfing Santas has donated all proceeds to two local non-profits, the Grind for Life organization and the Florida Surf Museum. According to the Surfing Santas website, “In December 2009, George Trosset, his son George Jr., with his wife Britteny, paddled out for a Christmas Eve surf. Over the past 7 years, the gathering has grown to nearly 650 Surfing Santas in the ocean at the same time.

Surfing Santas has evolved into an annual gathering of the local surfing “tribes”, sharing the ride of Christmas Magic. It is the one day a year that ALL the local tribes share ALL the waves at a local surf spot.”

All ages gather to watch the surfing Santas, to mingle, people watch, and get their jingle on. (Some in the form of Mimosas at 8 a.m., it is rumored.)

The morning started out foggy and gray, but the sun quickly burned that off and with temperatures in the 80’s, Santa kept a smile on his face while sweat trickled down into his boots.

hasn’t finished wrapping her gifts (I mentioned this to one of my dear friends who is ready for Christmas before Halloween, and she was scandalized) so I will leave you with some more fantastically fun photos of this happy event. Put it on your calendar for next year and come up and say hi if you see us! And if I’m in the same predicament, maybe you can help wrap? There may be a Mimosa in it for you….
